Unexpected Luxury: Why Your Next Dream Vacation Might Not Be Where You Think

When most people picture a luxury vacation, they imagine an overwater bungalow, a five-star Caribbean resort, or an elegant suite overlooking the ocean. Those destinations certainly deserve their reputation, but after spending time in Montana last summer, I found myself thinking differently about what luxury really means.

Luxury isn’t always about where you stay. More often, it’s about how a place makes you feel.

Some of the most memorable travel experiences I’ve had weren’t defined by marble lobbies or extravagant amenities. They were created by breathtaking scenery, genuine hospitality, meaningful experiences, and the opportunity to slow down long enough to appreciate the moment. While luxury resorts continue to be one of my favorite ways to travel, I’ve been reminded that extraordinary experiences can be found in places many travelers never expect.

Unexpected Luxury Travel Experiences in Montana

Montana probably isn’t the first destination that comes to mind when you think of luxury travel, yet perhaps it should be.

Driving through Big Sky Country, it’s impossible not to notice how quickly the pace of life begins to change. Endless mountain ranges stretch across the horizon, rivers wind through open valleys, and wildlife appears where you least expect it. Luxury here isn’t measured by extravagance. It’s measured by space, quiet, and the rare opportunity to disconnect from everyday routines.

Imagine waking up in a beautifully appointed mountain lodge, sipping coffee on a deck overlooking pine-covered hills, and ending your evening beside an outdoor fire beneath one of the darkest skies in North America. There is a simplicity to Montana that feels refreshingly luxurious, reminding us that sometimes the greatest indulgence is having nowhere to rush and every reason to stay a little longer.

That same feeling stayed with me after visiting Olympic National Park earlier this year. Standing among ancient forests and rugged coastlines reinforced something I’ve been discovering through my own travels: luxury today is becoming less about excess and more about experiences that leave us feeling renewed.

Caribbean Luxury Travel Experiences

Of course, if your idea of luxury includes warm turquoise water, attentive service, and mornings that begin with the sound of gentle waves, the Caribbean remains one of my favorite places to recommend.

Aruba has become especially exciting for travelers from Michigan and Ohio, with new nonstop flights from Detroit making this sunshine-filled island even easier to reach. Known for its consistently beautiful weather, powder-soft beaches, and welcoming atmosphere, Aruba offers the kind of effortless vacation where your biggest decision may be whether to spend the afternoon by the pool, exploring the island, or lingering over dinner with an ocean view.

Beyond Aruba, some of the Caribbean’s most rewarding luxury destinations lie a little farther south. Curaçao captivates visitors with its colorful Dutch-Caribbean architecture, crystal-clear diving waters, and boutique charm. Barbados blends refined elegance with world-class dining, championship golf, and beautiful beachfront resorts, while Saint Vincent remains one of the region’s hidden gems for travelers seeking tranquility, natural beauty, and a more intimate luxury experience.

These Southern Caribbean islands also make excellent choices for late fall and winter travel, offering beautiful weather while introducing many travelers to destinations they may never have considered before.

Finding Your Perfect Luxury Travel Experience

Montana completely changed my perspective on luxury travel experiences. One of the questions I hear most often is, “What’s the best luxury resort?”

The truth is that there isn’t a single answer.

For some travelers, luxury means an adults-only beachfront retreat with personalized service, spa treatments, and candlelit dinners beneath the stars. For others, it’s a family resort where every detail has been thoughtfully planned so everyone. Where grandparents to grandchildren can relax together. Still others find luxury in a secluded mountain lodge, a private villa, or a boutique hotel that feels more like home than a resort.

As a travel advisor, I’ve learned that my role isn’t simply recommending destinations. It’s understanding how my clients want to feel when they travel and then helping them find the place that delivers exactly that experience.

When One Vacation Becomes Two

One of my favorite travel trends is combining different styles of travel into one unforgettable journey.

Imagine spending several relaxing days at a luxury Caribbean resort before boarding a boutique yacht that explores hidden harbors and charming coastal towns inaccessible to larger ships. Or picture pairing a beachfront escape with a few days exploring Costa Rica’s rainforests, where luxury eco-lodges, wildlife encounters, and breathtaking scenery create an entirely different perspective on what a vacation can be.

The same is true in Alaska, where elegant lodges, glacier cruises, and incredible wildlife encounters remind us that adventure and luxury are not opposites. In many ways, they complement each other perfectly.

More Than a Vacation

This philosophy is also what inspired me to create my Signature Experiences.

Rather than simply booking a trip, I wanted to create opportunities for people to share meaningful experiences together. This fall, I’ll be hosting a Signature Experience in Negril, Jamaica, where guests can enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of one of my favorite Caribbean destinations while choosing optional experiences like a catamaran cruise, spa treatments, or simply spending an afternoon watching the waves roll onto Seven Mile Beach.

Travel has always been about more than checking destinations off a list. It’s about the conversations shared over dinner, the friendships formed along the way, and the memories that continue long after the suitcase has been unpacked.

Travel Well

The more I travel, the more convinced I become that luxury isn’t one-size-fits-all.

For some, it’s watching the sunrise over the mountains of Montana. For others, it’s feeling warm Caribbean sand beneath their feet, sailing into hidden island harbors, or discovering a destination they never imagined would become a favorite.

Whatever your version of luxury looks like, I hope you give yourself permission to experience it.

Because the best journeys don’t simply take us somewhere beautiful.

They remind us to slow down, reconnect with the people we love, and return home with stories that become part of who we are.

Travel well,

Jen
